Posted in Home

Often times, people feel overwhelmed when it comes to laying carpet. Because of this they may hire a carpenter to do the job for them. This can be costly to many homeowners. Laying carpet is much easier than what it seems. There are a few steps you need to take in preparation before laying your carpet and a few steps to follow while laying your carpet. With the right guide, you can tackle laying your own carpet without the help and cost of a carpenter.

First thing is first. You need to be sure that the area you plan on laying carpet is clean and free of any debris. Go through and sweep or vacuum the area thoroughly. Search around to make sure there are no nails poking out of the floor. Those that you do find, take a hammer and gently tap the nails down into the floor so they do not provide any obstruction. Once you have cleaned the surface off, you need to apply your tacking strips which can be purchased at any home improvement center. The purpose of tacking strips is to keep your carpet firmly in place against the edges of your room. These long, thin pieces of wood will help you stretch your carpet out, if needed, later on in your project as well.

After you have finished installing the tacking strips you need to lay down your carpet pad. Carpet pad helps protect your carpet from excessive wear and tear and makes your carpet more soft and comfortable. The textured side of the carpet pad is what needs to be facing up. Measure your carpet pad to make sure it stretches to your tacking strips before cutting it down to size. Secure your padding down using staples or carpet tacks ever so often during your project. This will help the carpet pad from shifting whenever you walk on it.

Measuring your carpet is the next step. You need to be sure and accurately measure the room you plan on laying carpet in. You want to be sure and cut a few extra inches to the edges of your carpet, leaving you excess in case it is needed. Mark notations of measurement down on paper in order to save you from miscalculation. You can always go back later on and cut off any excess. Make sure you have a sharp utility knife to do this.

As long as you follow these few simple procedures, you will be well on your way to new, beautifully installed carpet. Instead of being intimidated by the project, prepare yourself by purchasing the right tools and gaining the right know how and you can tackle this project and save yourself money at the same time.
